Creating a Sustainable Environment begins
with Resource Conservation.
Conserving our resources means recycling. When it comes to organic resources, often that means Composting, transforming the organics into premium soil and soil amendments.
All
animal health, including human beings, depends upon soil quality. Our
health depends on the health of our food, which comes from the soil and is, therefore,
dependant upon the health of the soil. NOW is the time to begin being stewards of
the soil, not exploiters, the time to become conservers of our resources. Now is the
time to start recycling ALL of our organic residuals, including food residuals.
Composting Facilities can be very good neighbors. Composting facilities can be beautifully landscaped. Reasonable set backs from the property lines provide ample space for creative grading and landscaping so that the active part of the composting facility is not visible from the border of the site.
Being a Good Neighbor is good business. We fully appreciate that focusing on being a good neighbor is far more economical than having unhappy neighbors. We invite community feedback. We take community concerns seriously and are committed to working with you to create a sustainable environment.
For soil to be healthy, it needs to have a healthy soil food web, including at least 10,000 different species of beneficial bacteria, along with many other kinds of microbes. These microbes build soil structure, cycle nutrients, provide natural control of plant diseases, and conserve moisture. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides cause more harm than good and cannot provide all the benefits of a healthy soil food web. Compost is the best way to restore soil health.
Putting organic matter in piles, windrows or any other format, is NOT, in and of itself, composting. Aerobic conditions and proper moisture must be maintained throughout the pile. "Aerobic conditions" should be verified with an oxygen meter. Responsible composting includes maintaining oxygen levels at or above 15%, and maintaining moisture at levels condusive to microbial productivity. Very often bio-filtering is also necessary. We use dynamic bio-filtering because of its efficiency and effectiveness.
NIMBY: We like to think of ourselves
as
having vision, not wearing blinders. We know that creating a sustainable environment
needs to be economical. That means minimizing transportation costs. We also
know for a fact that a composting facility can be a very good neighbor.
We have visited over 45 compost facilities around the country, from Maine to Arkansas, from Texas and Oklahoma to California, Washington and Oregon. A few, like the Nestlé composting facility in New Milford, Connecticut, are extremely good neighbors. We strive to be an even better neighbor than Nestlé's New Milford Farm.
