We are willing and prepared to come into schools and teach the students and faculty about composting. This program can include helping the class set up two compost research silos for composting the cafeteria organic residuals. That includes food and other organic residuals. One of the two silos gets set up for composting the food, etc. The other is set up as a bio-filter. Based on our experience, food composting must incorporate forced aeration for multiple reasons.
This program is designed to be hands on experiential learning where the learning is done with their own eyes, hands, and noses.
This program includes a computer based slide program, covering, among other topics, the Soil Food Web, and the need to be stewards of the soil, the benefits of restoring life to the soil and stopping the "chemical warfare" of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Once our new composting facility is up and running, we expect to be set up for school tours of our facility. Of course these must be scheduled in advance. Education is a very important part of our vision and mission.
For Landscape Architects & Designers
Plants perform better, are healthier when they are growing in healthy soil. A program is being developed, being designed for professionals. The goal is to help designers to understand the need for, and the economy of taking care of the soil first. We already have some very interesting educational material available for professional designers.
Landscapers are the ones who bare much of the cost of replacing plants that don't thrive. As Dr. Ralph Snodsmith says, put a 50¢ plant in a $5.00 hole. Take care of the soil first. We are developing educational programs for landscapers. For more information, click here to e-mail us.
We are happy to come to service club meetings and present a program on the importance of expanding composting as part of our resource conservation, and to create a sustainable environment. These programs center around computer based slide shows including a lot of graphics. Something about a picture being worth a thousand words has been a guiding principle as we develop our programs. Part of the overall plan for the new composting facility includes developing an intern program for people serious about working in the composting field. The program will be a combination of:
| Hands on experience with compost research silos | |
| Hands on in our micro-biology lab, including learning how to do the microbial assays. | |
| Hands on in the greenhouse, learning how plants perform in different growing mediums. | |
| Classroom time | |
| At least one research project. |
