Public Health & Composting

Quality Compost is Proven to have tremendous decontamination ability, the microbes being able to break down many pollutants.  Compost protects our water supplies by both decontamination, and by preventing erosion.  Composting is being used at many old military bases for soil remediation, for extremely effective decontamination, breaking down explosives and petroleum, at millions of dollars of savings, compared to incineration.

Composting offers a much safer alternative to landfilling and incineration.  Composting recycles the organic residuals producing a much needed resource that can massively improve our soils.

In the early stages of responsible composting the material heats to over 131°F, a threshold above which harmful pathogens are killed.

Organic residuals can be recycled, transformed into premium top soil.  Only Short Term Thinking buries or incinerates its resources.

Incinerators and Landfills are known serious public health hazards.  Further more the petro-chemical fertilizers and pesticides used on depleted soils are also known health hazards.  If life is restored to the soil with quality compost, then few, if any, of those chemicals are needed.

Some of the Benefits of Responsible Composting include:

bulletComposting diverts organic residuals from landfills and incinerators.  "Organic Residuals" should include most food wastes as well as many other materials.
bulletApplying Quality Compost to Sports and other turf improves soil moisture managing capacity, reducing both erosion and the need for irrigation.   Compost improves the soil structure, also enabling sports turf to be useable sooner after heavy rains.
bulletApplying Quality Compost facilitates natural nutrient cycling, reducing or eliminating the need to apply chemical fertilizers;
bulletApplying Quality Compost improves the Soil Food Web and enables beneficial microbes to naturally suppress plant diseases, without the use of toxic chemical pesticides.
bulletThe microbes in Quality Compost are very effective in breaking down contaminants in the soil, including petroleum spills and many other chemicals.   After the nuclear accident at Chernobyl in April, 1986, it was discovered that the microbes in compost enriched soil were able to bind up the radio activity, keeping it out of produce grown in soils rich in quality compost.

All Animal Health (including humans) depends on Soil Health.  Our food comes from the soil, whether directly or indirectly.   The plants that provide us with oxygen through photosynthesis depend on the soil for their health.
