The above Soil Food Web chart was developed by Elaine Ingham, PhD, Associate Professor at Oregon State University. This is a very simplified version of the Soil Food Web. In a healthy soil there is no problem with root feeding namatodes because there are Predatory Nematodes that entice, entrap and feed on the root feeding namatodes. Mesostigmatid mites will also feed on the root feeding nematodes.
Mycorrhizal fungi play a very important role in making nutrients and moisture available to the roots of plants.
The Soil Biology Primer is an excellent booklet on the role of the Soil Food Web, and is available on line by clicking here.
